Cogent Completes Safety Modernization Initiative for BC Pellet Mill

Cogent Completes Safety Modernization Initiative for BC Pellet Mill

Cogent implemented a fully integrated Emergency Stop (E-Stop) system to strengthen site-wide safety control

Project Overview

As part of the client’s commitment to bringing all its sites to a high and unified safety standard, Cogent Industrial Technologies was engaged to modernize the safety systems at one of its pellet mills. An older plant that was once a feed mill, the site lacked a plant-wide Emergency Stop (E-Stop) system that would enable rapid, coordinated shutdown capability in the event of an emergency.

Cogent worked alongside the site's electricians to capture their institutional knowledge of the plant and design an overarching E-Stop system. Valued at $130,000, the project took place over a 6-month period from design through commissioning and construction, with Cogent serving as general contractor and coordinating all stakeholders and subcontractors.

The Challenge

With a mix of legacy equipment sourced from multiple vendors and limited available documentation, one of the main challenges of designing an overarching safety system was to identify how each piece of machinery would cut power and shut down in the event of an emergency and factor this into the overall design.

Because of the plant’s scale and the project’s cost sensitivity, the solution required streamlined, cost-effective specifications that balanced functionality with simplicity. The timeline added additional pressure, as the system needed to be fully commissioned within the same year.

Our Solution

Through close collaboration, on-the-ground decision-making, and disciplined engineering, Cogent delivered a solution that aligned with both the client's safety standards and the operational realities of the plant.

Working with the site's electricians, the team conducted detailed site assessments and interviews to map equipment interdependencies and determine the safest, most efficient shutdown strategy for each process area.

Leveraging experience across multiple of the client’s facilities, Cogent applied proven safety design templates and documentation frameworks to deliver a reliable, cost-effective solution. The project also established a foundation for future site documentation and continued alignment with the client's broader safety modernization program.

Results & Impact

The new E-Stop system enhanced safety control and operational reliability, providing a dependable method for rapid, coordinated shutdown during emergency conditions. Cogent completed the project on schedule and on budget, with zero post-commissioning callbacks and full integration into the plant’s planned shutdown window.

Project highlights:

  • Fully integrated, cost-effective E-Stop system tailored to site scale and operations
  • Completed on schedule and on budget
  • Implemented during planned shutdown periods to avoid disrupting production
  • Expected reduction in insurance costs due to enhanced safety safeguards
